May 10, 2022 by VanHornMetz Leave a Comment

What is an alkyd emulsion?

An alkyd emulsion is a polyester resin additive for paints and coatings that provides enhanced gloss, drying speed, and protection. Read our recent blog, “The Different Alkyd Resin Uses – An Overview” to learn more about alkyds.

WorléeSol E 150 W as a Binder – Performance Benefits

Paints and coatings are applied to surfaces to beautify and protect. Most surfaces around us are coated in one way or another, and these surface coatings can be formulated with additives to provide many useful functions and performance benefits.

WorléeSol E 150 W is a high performance binder for the manufacture of airdrying water thinnable paint systems. By using WorléeSol E 150 W in your paint and coating products you can bring or improve several key characteristics.

Adding WorléeSol E 150 W to your paint and coatings brings:

  • Application versatility – brush, spray, roll, dipping
  • Good brush drag
  • Almost no VOC
  • Good drying performance (even under unfavorable weather conditions)
  • High gloss and good gloss stability
  • Less dark yellowing
  • Fast hardness development
  • Early water resistance
  • Good weather resistance
  • Good insulating properties
  • Can be formulated siccative- and MEKO-free

WorléeSol E 150 W as an Additive

In addition to being a binder, the E 150 W can be used as a co-binder (additive) for instance in an acrylic formulation to improve open time, gloss and leveling. Furthermore, you can avoid film forming agents by using the E 150 W to reduce VOC content.

WorléeSol E 150 W Formulation and Application

WorléeSol E 150 W is mainly suitable for the manufacture of fast air and forced drying systems. Top coats with high gloss, excellent hardness, and very good water resistance and outdoor performance can be formulated.

Neutralization is not necessary in formulation. To obtain the highest gloss, 3-5 % Butyl glycol or propylene glycol + Dispex Ultra 4550 or WorléeDisperse VP 8450 W/ VP 8460 W is recommended in the grind – WorléeSol E 150 W is shear stable. Care must be taken to avoid impurities with pigments and extenders (e.g. Blanc Fixe micro). It is important that the mill base have the right viscosity. Too low viscosity will cause foam and reduce the dispersibility. Viscosity that is too thin can be adjusted by adding PU thickener. Suitable driers are Octa Soligen Co 7% Aqua or cobalt-free WorléeAdd 2700. Antiskinning agent is not necessary.

Other recommended additives:

  • Dispersing agent: WorléeDisperse VP 8400 W
  • Defoamers (only for dip- or brush application): WorléeAdd 6226
  • Substrate wetting: WorléeAdd 3440
  • Improve slip, mar resistance and antiblocking: WorléeAdd 3520
  • Nitrit-free anti-flash rust agent: WorléeAdd 458

For packaging and storage, tins and drums must be interior coated. Paints based on WorléeSol E 150 W show good gloss stability after storage.

Application fields for WorléeSol E 150 W are air drying decorative, house and DIY paints as well as wood protective glazings. WorléeSol E 150 W shows good compatibility with many water thinnable alkyd resins and acrylic dispersions.

Applications for WorléeSol E 150 W:

  • Wood primer
  • Insulating paints
  • Semi-gloss wood paints
  • High gloss wood paints
  • Clear wood coats
  • Wood stains
  • Anti-corrosion primers
  • Industrial top coats
  • Stoving enamels
  • Joinery coatings
  • Aerosols
